Designing art for skateboards

I wanted to share with you a project I’ve been working on for a few weeks.  I wanted to get a skateboard deck that was the old-school 80s shape that I rode as a kid, so I picked up a moose deck on Amazon, for $35 and started working on some new designs.

Originally I was going to go with a more graffiti look, but then starting thinking more about an illustration, in a Moebius-style (The European illustrator) and since I’ve been working on this comic book Boaz, I thought that would be perfect.

I started with some design ideas on paper and color pencils.

I then went to digital and recreated it there and also a value study of it.

Next step was to re-draw it on a bigger paper and really block the line work out.  This is my main reference for when I start drawing on the board.

Now it was time to put it on the wood.

I first sanded it down a bit to get the coating that was on the board from the manufacturer.

After the pencils, I laid down some ink lines with my rapidograph pen.  This actually became a problem, I wouldn’t do this next time, the ink was too dark and I needed to get a heavy body yellow to cover it.  Next time I would only use the penciled lines, if I’m painting.

Masked parts of the board for airbrushing.

Finished the painting, mostly acrylics with pen work over it.

Next was to coat it with a two-part epoxy resin.

And now, put the trucks on and start riding!

  1. I try to have goals, and when you actually achieve one it’s pretty rewarding. Start small: I wanna draw a skateboard. Then what? I wanna do a series. Then what? My current goal is draw a board for every SOTY. This won’t be easy, but if you are reading this, Chris Senn! Holler at me!
