Some people have asked me, how does the painting work and how can I be in the book?
The current kickstarter has a reward level of $350 that gets your likeness in the book, and three backers from the previous kickstarter received it. Along with the book, you will receive an original watercolored page from the comic with you in it, as well as the bag, shirt and patch.
Here’s my process for painting Pariah:
First thing it to get my paints together, I am using Dr PH Martin’s hydrus watercolors. They are very vilbrant, color-fast and easy to use. I love them, but they are a little pricey.
I’ve been using a bamboo brush lately, because I can swath a big part of the page, and it has a nice fine tip as well, I got this one at Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. I also have a W&N Series 7 sabel brush which is my go-to brush for all my inking. Since the family is away for the week, I’m painting on the couch in the living room, while watching some TV.
I’m going to start off with my blues. I mix a couple of colors together to get the correct hue and since this is night-time I lay down the blues.
I usually start with figures, but it all depends on mood.
Next I start to lay the browns and get the two colors to work together. Sometimes I use wet-on-wet if I want them to blend, other times its after the first layer has dried, it all depends on the effect I need.
Lastly, I touch things up, do some more details, ink a few spots and add borders. (The borders are added digitally in the comic, but since these are going out to backers for the kickstarter I added them in.)
So each of those three pages has one of the backers in it, if you want to be in BOOK 3, please consider backing this new kickstarter!
